As precocious as your toddler might be, they are not going to be up to maintaining a tank requiring a lot of attention to water chemistry.....at least for awhile. However, by getting them started with a relatively basic tank, you will be providing them with several valuable experiences. First, fish are a good first pet. They take some regular feeding and care which can introduce your child to taking responsibility but the task is not complicated and a few mistakes along the way should not reap tragic consequences. Fish don't run out into the road and get run over by traffic.
Secondly, you can guide your growing child into more complex tanks as the years pass. This will provide a great learning experience as your child learns cause and effect, measurement, and observation techniques. In the coming month, I will show some tanks on this page which would make great tanks for young children.
